France Voices Criticism to US Sanctions on ICC Judges
In its statement, the French Foreign Ministry noted that Paris had acknowledged the new sanctions targeting two ICC judges, which come on top of restrictions already placed on nine others.
France “condemns all forms of threats and coercive measures” against the ICC, its personnel, and civil society groups that support the institution, stressing that such actions represent an assault on the court itself and the 125 nations that are parties to the Rome Statute.
“These measures are contrary to the principle of judicial independence,” the ministry emphasized, underlining that the ICC must be able to carry out its responsibilities without political interference.
Paris also conveyed solidarity with the judges affected by the sanctions and reiterated its “unwavering support” for the ICC and its staff.
The ministry affirmed that France will continue collaborating with European allies and other Rome Statute members to guarantee the court’s ability to operate impartially and autonomously.
On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions against the two ICC judges, accusing them of being “directly engaged” in what he described as “the illegitimate targeting of Israel.”
