Germany’s Gas Reserves Plunge to Historic Low
According to a news agency, underground storage levels are now around 50%, a sharp decline compared to approximately 77% at the same point last year.
Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) indicates that reserves have dropped by about 13% in just the past month.
Stefan Dohler, head of Oldenburg-based supplier EWE, cautioned that if depletion continues at this pace, storage could shrink to only 5% by March.
“I don’t want to sound the alarm, but I want to point out that the current fill-level situation is as bad as it was at the beginning of 2022,” he said, recalling one of the most critical shortages in Germany’s energy history.
Analysts attribute the rapid drawdown to unusually cold weather that set in during late December, pushing heating demand well above typical January levels.
