Rubio Urges Renewal of Transatlantic Alliance Centered on Western Unity
Speaking at the annual Munich Security Conference, Rubio framed the moment as a pivotal point for Europe and the US, drawing parallels to the Cold War era when the conference was first held in 1963.
“We gather here today as members of a historic alliance, an alliance that saved and changed the world,” he said, recalling a divided Europe and the existential threats posed by Soviet communism. He warned that post-Cold War optimism had fostered “misguided assumptions about globalization and liberal democracy.”
“The euphoria of this triumph led us to a dangerous delusion ... that every nation would now be a liberal democracy,” Rubio said, arguing that overreliance on global institutions, free trade, and mass migration had weakened Western societies and undermined economic sovereignty.
He outlined the foreign policy direction of the Donald Trump administration, emphasizing strategies centered on national interests, stronger borders, and industrial renewal.
“Under President Trump, the United States of America will once again take on the task of renewal and restoration,” Rubio said, adding that Washington aims to pursue this vision alongside European partners.
Highlighting shared cultural and historical ties, he described the transatlantic relationship as rooted in “one civilization, Western civilization,” and urged European allies to strengthen defense capabilities while maintaining cultural confidence.
Rubio stressed that alliances should extend beyond military cooperation to include technological competition, supply chain security, and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and space exploration.
