Mayor Khan Turns on Ramadan Lights in London’s West End

(MENAFN) London’s West End glowed this week as Mayor Sadiq Khan officially turned on the city’s Ramadan lights Friday evening, marking the fourth year the display has honored the Muslim holy month in central London, according to reports.

Over 30,000 LED lights, featuring designs inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, now illuminate Leicester Square and surrounding streets, initially displaying “Happy Ramadan” and switching to “Happy Eid” on March 18. The initiative is funded and organized by the Aziz Foundation.

At the lighting ceremony, Khan urged the public to come together amid growing political tensions and rising Islamophobia, saying: “Let’s show the best of London, let’s show the best of Britain, and let’s show the best of Islam.”

He added: “I call on Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Sikhs, those of organized religions, and those that aren’t, come together during this month of Ramadan.”

Highlighting global hardships, the mayor encouraged worshippers to keep in mind those suffering in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine, through prayer and charitable actions. He also cautioned against those “sowing the seeds of division, hatred, and fear,” emphasizing the city’s role as a counter to such negativity: “One of the jobs we have during this month of Ramadan, whether you are Muslim or non-Muslim, is to show that London is the antidote to that hatred. We are the antithesis of everything they believe in.”

Khan later shared on social media that illuminating Piccadilly Circus was “a pleasure,” calling London “a beacon of hope, unity, and inclusivity,” where “diversity is a strength, and where everyone is loved and wanted.”
